2024 Emmy Predictions:
Reality Categories (Competition Program, Structured, and Unstructured)

Weekly Commentary (Updated: June 20, 2024): It’s a thrilling time for reality TV fans, with established giants and fresh faces all vying for recognition. The battle for supremacy in the reality competition program category is heating up with 60 contenders vying for top honors. Leading the pack are Peacock’s gripping “The Traitors” and CBS’ venerable “Survivor,” which just delivered its most riveting season in over a decade. MTV’s fan-favorite “RuPaul’s Drag Race” seems a shoo-in for one of the five coveted spots. That leaves only two slots open for a host of other well-known series that have received noms in the past, including “The Amazing Race,” “The Voice,” “Top Chef,” and “Nailed It.”

Adding a twist to the competition is Netflix’s newcomer “Squid Game: The Challenge,” which could very well shake things up.

As for the 48 hosts in contention, three familiar faces from last year are back: RuPaul, the “Fab Five” from “Queer Eye,” and Nicole Byer. Notably, this is the first season without Padma Lakshmi at the helm of “Top Chef,” but new host Kristen Kish is proving to be a strong contender. She’s up against Alan Cumming from Peacock, who could potentially dethrone the eight-time consecutive winner RuPaul. And let’s not count out Jeff Probst, who might finally return to the lineup after his last win in 2011 (read Variety’s in-depth interview with the veteran host).

In the structured reality race, 28 shows are competing, including Netflix’s awards darlings “Love is Blind” and “Queer Eye,” and PBS’s perennial nominee “Antiques Roadshow.” HBO/Max’s “We’re Here” made quite a splash in the final days of voting, clinching a win at the Critics Choice Real TV Awards, while Showtime’s critically acclaimed “Couples Therapy” dropped just under the eligibility wire.

The unstructured reality category features 38 shows, many hailing from the ever-dramatic Bravo universe, such as “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” “Ultimate Girls Trip: RHONY Legacy,” “Vanderpump Rules,” and “Below Deck Down Under.” Could recent standout seasons of TLC’s “Sister Wives” and “90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way” pull off a surprise and earn a spot?

Nominations-round voting is open from June 13 and closes on June 24 at 10:00 p.m. PT. Voting for peer group-specific top ten round panels (if applicable) takes place between June 28 and July 8. The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 17. The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies will occur over two nights on Sept. 7-8. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, Sept. 15.

About the Primetime Emmy Awards

The Primetime Emmy Awards, commonly known as the Emmys, are awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Established in 1949, these celebrate outstanding achievements in American primetime television. The Emmys are categorized into three divisions: the Primetime Emmy Awards for performance and production excellence; the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, recognizing achievements in artistry and craftsmanship; and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards, which honor significant engineering and technological advancements. The eligibility period typically extends from June 1 to May 31 each year.
