Lena Dunham Is 'So Touched' by“ Girls'” Resurgence: 'Never Imagined'

"I'm just so grateful that it still resonates with people," said Dunham of the series that ran from 2012 to 2017

Lena Dunham will always have a special place in her heart for Hannah Horvath.

While it's been seven years since Girls aired its series finale after six seasons, the HBO series continues to have a devoted fandom, and Dunham, 38, couldn't be more grateful.

"I am so touched and honored that young people this cool and on their s--- are responding to the show," she shared in an interview with E! News. "I never made the show imagining that it would be seen at all, much less seen in 10 years. I'm just so grateful that it still resonates with people."

Girls followed Hannah, Marnie Michaels (Allison Williams), Jessa Johansson (Jemima Kirke), and Shoshanna Shapiro (Zosia Mamet) as they navigated their lives as twentysomethings living in New York City.

Dunham particularly credits the show's continued resurgence to Generation Z.

"They're cooler, they're smarter, they're more on top of it. I feel like in every way that older people rolled their eyes at millennials, I have the opposite experience," she said.

The multi-hyphenate shared that the show's evergrowing fanbase motivated her to work on Netflix's Too Much, an upcoming series she co-created with her husband, Luis Felber, and said it "is the first show that I fully ran, wrote and directed since Girls."

"I'm not the most online person. But knowing that the cool, radical young people of TikTok were responding to Girls definitely gave me a spring in my step as I approached this new project," she explained.

According to Tudum, the upcoming ten-episode romantic comedy series follows Jessica (Megan Stalter), a New Yorker who heads to London after a "painful breakup" and builds a connection "impossible to ignore" with Felix (Will Sharpe).

Dunham said in a statement shared by Tudum that the show is something "very close to my heart."

"Created with my husband Luis, cast with my favorite actors — the geniuses that are Meg and Will, along with a bevy of friends — and partnering again with Working Title, who are behind the romantic comedies that formed me,” her statement continued.

Stalter, 33, echoed similar sentiments while speaking to PEOPLE in May, expressing that working with Dunham was the "ultimate dream come true."

“It’s just the funniest show. Every day on set, we were laughing so hard I was crying," said Stalter.
